In praise of Ferris Bueller

I'm guessing I'm not the only one of my generation to have been saddened by the recent death of John Hughes, writer / director / producer of a slew of 80's teen comedies. There was something about films like Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast Club that just felt "right" to a teenager in the 80's.

At a loose end the other night I put on Ferris Bueller's Day Off, a movie I regard as one of my favourites but one that doesn't get watched too often.

I think I had completely underestimated the influence its had on my life. Who wouldn't want a friend like Ferris?

"The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, waistoids, dweebies, dickheads - they all adore him. They think he's a righteous dude. "

If my parents have ever watched it, I'm sure they've made the connection between Ferris and with my own work ethic :) FFS I even skived off sixth form college for the afternoon to go and see the movie when it was released.

Rest in peace John, you have made my life a hoot.
